Digital Payment Safety Tips

Protect yourself and your business from online payment fraud, UPI scams, and phishing attacks.

Top Digital Payment Safety Tips for India

Follow these essential guidelines to keep your digital payments and financial data secure.

Verify UPI IDs Before Paying

Always double-check the UPI ID or phone number before sending money. A single character difference could send your money to a fraudster. Call the recipient to confirm if you are in doubt.

Never Share OTP or PIN

No bank, UPI app, or legitimate company will ever ask for your OTP, PIN, or card number over the phone or via SMS. If someone asks, it is always a scam — hang up immediately.

Use Trusted Payment Apps Only

Stick to official payment apps from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Avoid clicking payment links received in WhatsApp messages from unknown numbers.

Check Website Security

Before entering any payment details online, verify the URL starts with "https://" and look for a padlock icon. Avoid making payments on websites with invalid or missing SSL certificates.

Use Virtual Cards for Online Shopping

Many banks offer virtual debit/credit cards for online transactions. These are limited to a specific amount and expire after use — significantly reducing fraud risk.

Enable Transaction Alerts

Enable real-time SMS and email alerts for all bank transactions. If you see an unauthorised transaction, contact your bank immediately and block your card or UPI ID.

Avoid Public Wi-Fi for Payments

Never make financial transactions on public Wi-Fi networks at airports, cafes, or hotels. Use your mobile data or a trusted VPN for all payment activities.

Keep Apps and Devices Updated

Ensure your banking apps, UPI apps, and mobile operating system are always up to date. Updates often include critical security patches that protect against new fraud methods.

Common Online Payment Scams in India

QR Code Scams

Scammers send QR codes claiming you will receive money, but scanning and entering your PIN actually sends money to them. Remember: QR codes are only for SENDING money, never for receiving.

Fake Bank Calls

Someone calls claiming to be from your bank and asks you to verify your account by sharing your OTP, card number, or internet banking password. Banks never ask for this.

Too-Good-To-Be-True Offers

Ads or messages offering extraordinary returns on investments, lottery winnings, or cashback deals that seem unrealistically high are almost always scams designed to steal your payment details.

Phishing SMS Links

Messages that appear to be from HDFC, SBI, ICICI, or other banks with links asking you to update your KYC or verify your account. Never click these links — always visit the bank website directly.
