Why Technical SEO Matters More Than You Think
You can publish the most valuable content in your industry, build hundreds of backlinks, and still rank on page three if your technical SEO is broken. Technical SEO is the foundation on which everything else sits. If Google cannot crawl your pages, your content will never rank. If your site is slow, Google will downrank it regardless of content quality.
At MKSON WORLD, we run a technical SEO audit as the first step with every new client. This checklist is adapted from our internal process — 25 checks we run on every website before touching anything else.
Crawlability and Indexation (Checks 1-6)
1. Robots.txt file: Verify your robots.txt is not accidentally blocking important pages. Use Google Search Console to test specific URLs. Many Indian websites have accidentally blocked their entire site with a "Disallow: /" directive.
2. XML Sitemap: Your sitemap should list all important pages, be submitted to Google Search Console, and be regularly updated. Pages not in your sitemap may take weeks longer to get indexed.
3. Indexation status: Check how many pages Google has indexed using "site:yourdomain.com" in Google search. Compare this to the number of pages on your site. Significant differences indicate crawling or indexation problems.
4. Canonical tags: Ensure every page has a self-referencing canonical tag, and pages with duplicate content (product variants, pagination) use canonical correctly to point to the preferred version.
5. Noindex tags: Audit which pages have noindex tags. Admin pages, thank-you pages, and duplicate content should be noindexed. But sometimes noindex gets accidentally applied to important pages.
6. Internal links to orphan pages: Every important page should be reachable from at least one other page on your site. Pages with no internal links are "orphans" — Google finds them slowly or not at all.
Site Speed and Core Web Vitals (Checks 7-12)
7. Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): Must be under 2.5 seconds. Use Google PageSpeed Insights. For Indian mobile networks, target under 2 seconds. LCP is almost always caused by large unoptimised images.
8. Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): Must be under 0.1. CLS measures visual stability — when elements shift around as the page loads, CLS goes up. Reserve space for images and ads.
9. Interaction to Next Paint (INP): Must be under 200ms. This replaced FID in 2024 and measures how quickly the page responds to user interactions.
10. Image optimisation: All images should be in WebP format, compressed, and sized appropriately. A 4MB product image on a mobile page is inexcusable.
11. Hosting performance: Time to First Byte (TTFB) should be under 600ms. If your server takes longer than this to respond, upgrade your hosting. Cheap shared hosting hurts both speed and rankings.
12. JavaScript and CSS minification: Minify all JS and CSS files. Leverage browser caching. Use a CDN for static assets.
Mobile Optimisation (Checks 13-16)
13. Mobile-first design: Google indexes the mobile version of your site. Test every page on mobile using Google's Mobile-Friendly Test tool.
14. Tap target sizes: Buttons and links must be at least 44x44 pixels to be clickable on mobile without precision. Tiny links cause poor user experience and increase bounce rate.
15. Viewport meta tag: Every page must have: <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">. Missing this tag breaks mobile rendering.
16. Font size: Body text should be minimum 16px on mobile. Smaller text forces users to zoom, which increases bounce rates.
On-Page Technical Elements (Checks 17-21)
17. Title tags: Every page must have a unique title tag under 60 characters with the primary keyword near the start.
18. Meta descriptions: Unique descriptions for every page, under 160 characters, with a compelling reason to click. These do not directly affect rankings but do affect click-through rate.
19. H1 tags: One H1 per page, containing the primary keyword. Multiple H1s on one page is a technical issue.
20. Structured data: Implement schema markup appropriate to your page type: Article schema for blog posts, Product schema for product pages, LocalBusiness schema for local businesses, FAQ schema for FAQ sections.
21. 404 errors: Use Screaming Frog or Google Search Console to find all 404 pages. Redirect them to relevant live pages using 301 redirects.
Security and Trust (Checks 22-25)
22. HTTPS: Every page must be served over HTTPS. Mixed content (HTTP resources on HTTPS pages) causes browser warnings and ranking issues.
23. Redirect chains: Long chains of redirects (A → B → C → D) slow down crawling and lose link equity. Flatten all redirect chains to direct 301s.
24. Duplicate content: Use Screaming Frog to identify near-duplicate pages. Common causes: www vs non-www, trailing slashes, URL parameters.
25. International targeting (hreflang): If your site serves content in multiple languages or targets India specifically, use hreflang tags to tell Google which language/region each page targets.
