The Digital Marketing Agency Problem in India
There are over 50,000 digital marketing agencies in India, ranging from freelancers working from home to large multi-city firms. The quality range is enormous. On one end, you have experienced, results-driven teams with proven track records. On the other, you have agencies that overpromise, underdeliver, and use your budget as a learning exercise for junior staff.
Choosing the wrong agency is expensive in two ways: you pay them, and you lose time that could have been spent with a good agency building real results. These 10 questions will help you separate the two.
Question 1: Can You Show Me Case Studies for Businesses Like Mine?
Every credible agency has a portfolio. Ask specifically for results from businesses in your industry or with a similar business model. An agency that has only done B2C fashion work may not understand the nuances of B2B technology marketing. Look for specific numbers: traffic growth, cost-per-lead improvement, ROAS, revenue impact.
Question 2: Who Will Actually Work on My Account?
Many agencies win business with senior strategists and then hand off execution to junior staff. Ask specifically who will manage your campaigns day-to-day, who is your primary point of contact, and what their experience level is. If you cannot get a straight answer, that is a red flag.
Question 3: How Do You Measure Success?
Beware of agencies that focus on vanity metrics: impressions, reach, followers. Legitimate marketing is measured in leads, sales, and revenue. A good agency will define KPIs upfront, set targets, and report against them monthly.
Question 4: What Happens If Results Are Not Meeting Targets?
Ask this directly. A trustworthy agency will have a clear answer: we review the strategy, we try different creative, we pivot channels, we communicate proactively. An evasive answer suggests they are not used to being held accountable.
Question 5: What Do You NOT Do Well?
This question reveals honesty. Every agency has strengths and weaknesses. An agency that claims to do everything perfectly is either lying or has not yet encountered a challenge. Good agencies know their limitations and refer out what they cannot do well.
Question 6: What Is Your Reporting Process?
Ask to see a sample report. It should be readable, specific, and focused on business outcomes. If it is 40 pages of raw data with no interpretation, that is not reporting — that is data dumping. Good reports tell a story: what happened, why, and what is changing.
Question 7: How Do You Stay Updated With Platform Changes?
Google and Meta update their algorithms constantly. An agency that is not investing in continuous learning will fall behind. Ask how their team stays current: industry certifications, conferences, research subscriptions, internal training programs.
Question 8: What Is Your Contract and Notice Period?
Be cautious of agencies that require 12-month contracts with no exit clauses. A confident agency offers 3-month contracts (minimum) with 30-day notice. This aligns incentives — they have to keep earning your business every month.
Question 9: Can I Speak to a Current Client?
References from current clients (not just alumni) are gold. Any credible agency can provide two or three clients willing to vouch for them. If they are reluctant to provide references, ask why.
Question 10: What Would You Do Differently on My Website/Campaigns Right Now?
Ask for a quick audit observation in the sales meeting. Good agencies cannot help themselves — they spot problems and opportunities immediately. This tests their knowledge and shows you what working with them will feel like.
